PALMETTO POLITICS
Thursday night the surviving six Republican presidential candidates debated at Myrtle Beach. South Carolina where John McCain is leading in the polls. Second-by-second tracking showed Huckabee and Thompson at the top and Paul at the bottom. Huckabee had perhaps the best line saying, “As the Air Force used to say; if you’re not catching flak you’re not over the target – so I must be over the target.” Thompson attacked Huckabee and some think as a longtime friend of McCain he’s decided if he can not win he will help McCain. The South Carolina Republican Primary is Saturday, January 19th and Democrat’s will hold their Primary the next Saturday, January 26th. McCain has squirted around Huckabee (27-24%) in South Carolina propelled by his win in New Hampshire. Clinton got no bounce from her come from behind win in New Hampshire and trails Obama in the Palmetto State (South Carolina) by 42-30%. .
Tuesday (January 15) is the Michigan primary where Huckabee and Romney are tied. McCain is a weak fifth behind Thompson and Giuliani. Saturday (January 19) is the Nevada vote.
Pollsters have less confidence in their prognostications having muffed the New Hampshire primary projecting an Obama win and having Clinton pulling off an upset.
FLASH: A dozen senior campaign staffers for Rudy Giuliani are forgoing their January paychecks, aides told Associated Press Friday morning, a sign of money trouble for the Republican presidential candidate.
