Two Tales of Democracy, One Is Real

Transnationals prevent local democracyFidel Castro, accustomed to hypocritizing his own single candidate elections, chose not to continue in his dictatorial role, but did appoint his broker without anyone able to oppose his actions, is an ostensible democratic voting system, but actually a one party system that prevent anyone from really changing leadership. Forces of nature but not of democracy were at work in this change, for democracy has always masqueraded in Cuba but only with heavy make up. Democracy was in no way behind this change of leadership. Hopefully forces of democracy will find a way to grow and bloom in the new regime.

Musharaff in Pakistan seems to have been moved aside as a result of a democratic election decided on by real voters and thus exerted political action that really can and did change the power of it’s leadership, which defines democracy and is not diminished by the myriad difference ways to practice changing the top leaders ship via votes and representatives many counties utilizes and call democracy. The US democratic practices are different that Pakistan, but the same important results did occur in their recent votes so that by a majority, in some manner, leader ship at the top was and did change. We can and should celebrate this form of live democracy.

So in this world where democracy means so many different things to so many different people here and around the world, one thing along determines if a system is democratic. Quit simply, can the voter, through public expression create enough who believe the same things, actually go to a voter booth that is not rigged and make enough votes in common so that the result is that government leadership changes because of individual voter choices. In few places are these voter choices really a direct democracy, the US is not it is a republic and elsewhere often voter choices exert their power up thorough a parliamentarian or other republic type system which is an intermediary between the voter and the leader affected but one directly influenced by the voter.

This type of Voter Voice is not really happening free of undue state pressure in China, Russia, Iran and other countries which are coordinating their cold war type policies against. Interesting, the UN membership may consist of more non democratic or effective republic than some for of more permanent power vested in someone with motivation and ability to perpetuate their control. Voter Voiced Democracies are in the minority in the world and always have been.
