ST. PATRIK’S DAY MARCH 14 - 17 THIS YEAR


Who doesn't like cookiesFor the first time in nearly 70 years, the luck of the Irish has run out, and March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day falls during Holy Week. So, the Catholic Church has moved the saint’s holiday to Friday, March 14th. But, not everyone will honor the Vatican’s decree and any number of Irish will likely celebrate on both days, and preferably over the four day weekend. This calendar conflict won’t happen again until 2160 depressing whiskey distillers worldwide.

St. Valentine’s Day


Soo good......Legend is Valentine’s Day evolved from St. Valentine, a Roman era Priest who was executed on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Saint Valentine, it is said, was a priest during the reign of Emperor Claudius ‘the Cruel’ and defied him by marrying Legionnaires against his edict — Claudius believed unmarried men fought harder because they had no worries of wife and family. Valentine was sentenced to and was beaten to death and then beheaded.

Look out now!

In 1723, the Delaware Indians settled as a campsite halfway between the Allegheny and the Susquehanna Rivers. The town is 90 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, at the intersection of Route 36 and Route 119. The Delawares considered groundhogs honorable ancestors. According to the original creation beliefs of the Delaware Indians, their forebears began life as animals in “Mother Earth” and emerged centuries later to hunt and live as men.

Let’s hope we have unique leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King whose life and accomplishments we honor with an annual holiday. Tomorrow, is that holiday.

MLK was a poet. He chose words that grabbed and touched people deeply. Unfortuately those words were felt by much of white America too slowly back then and in all races too shallowly today.
